Overview

Plot Summary

With the opening song (Here Comes The Show) we are introduced to a kind, gentle Queen who longs for nothing more than her very own baby. Her wish is granted and she has a daughter whom she names Snow White. Skipping forward a few years we learn through the gossipy courtiers that the Queen has died, leaving the dim-witted King literally holding the baby! They soon find him a replacement wife, whose dramatic and amusing arrival brings calamity to the palace (song – Out With The Old). A selfish and vain woman, fawned over by her sly cronies, she banishes her young step-daughter to the forest and sets about spending the royal fortune on shoes and handbags! Snow White nevertheless settles into her woodland home, becoming a dear friend (and teacher) to the animals. (song – It’ll be Alright, Snow White).
As the years pass, Snow White grows into a beautiful young woman, a detail which the evil Queen learns from a mirror which she believes talks to her. This mirror is in fact an ingenious creation of her cronies; they use it to keep her convinced that she is the kingdom’s most glamorous female, even though she has the face of a bull-dog chewing a wasp! However, the threat of Snow White’s beauty leads the Queen to drastic action. Despatching her woodcutter to the forest with orders to kill Snow White and return with her heart, the Queen is confident her own ‘gorgeousness’ will now be unchallenged. Snow White, however, escapes and runs deeper into the forest, leaving the woodcutter to seek an alternative offal-source with which to convince the Queen of Snow White’s demise. Needless to say the woodland animals don’t stick around either!
Finding refuge in a small dwelling belonging to seven vertically-challenged chaps (song – The Teeny Tribe), Snow White convinces her hosts to make her residence a permanent arrangement, in return for her ‘keeping house’ and looking after them. Life continues pleasantly (song – Life Is Wonderful) until the Queen finds out that Snow White is still alive. She orders her evil boffin inventors to create dastardly implements by which her step-daughter can easily be finished-off once and for all (song – The Evil Boffins). She sets off in disguise to find Snow White and, having conned her way through the front door, tricks her into eating a poisoned apple.
Snow White’s housemates return to find her lifeless body. Devastated at their loss, accompanied by the grieving animals they take her into the forest to be laid to rest. However, the funeral is interrupted by a Prince from the neighbouring kingdom who is leading a hunting party. Despite Snow White’s ‘situation’ presenting a few practical problems to the possibility of long-term romance, he instantly falls in love with her (song – Here All Along). As he leans in to kiss her, the fumes from his unique eau-de-cologne cause Snow White to have a coughing fit, whereby she dislodges the offending piece of poisoned apple from her throat!
In a typical ‘happy-ever-after’ ending all wrongs are righted, family and friends are reunited, justice is duly administered where required and our story ends with a slap-up wedding….just as you’d expect! (song – Everything’s Turned Out Fine).

I loved the script and songs as they were entertaining and very funny. Another bonus was that I was able to ‘eek’ out 32 speaking parts for the children. This was very handy as I didn’t end up with lots of children sitting around bored whilst the rest rehearsed. The stage directions, sound effects and character descriptions were also very useful. The children that watched the show (pre-school and younger siblings) enjoyed watching a traditional tale that they were familiar with, whilst the adults roared with laughter at the very funny punch lines. Thank you very much for being so helpful in the planning stages. We will definitely be in touch next year!

I was in this play when I left primary school and I played Snow White herself! I enjoyed it while doing it and I think it’s fair to say if my old year 6 class had a talk about it we’d all have some memorable and hilarious things to say! I especially liked singing my solo.
