Join a group of eager (and some not-so-eager) school children on their week’s residential visit to ‘Slippery Slopes Activity Centre’, where they experience a catalogue of mishaps on their way to learning one very important lesson….good friends are worth their weight in sweets!

Having contended with weeping parents, moody bus drivers, accommodation that can hardly be described as 4-star and activity leaders with little regard for health & safety, can the children pull together and eventually succeed in the team-building challenges they are set? Or will they always come off second-best to Slippery Slopes’ other residents, those smug pupils from the Toffington College of Excellence & High Achievement? More importantly though, can they organise a midnight feast without getting caught?!

Overview

Plot Summary

As the annual school residential visit approaches, Headteacher Mrs Grimm and teachers Mr Dainty and Miss Manly are holding a presentation evening to parents (your audience), to share details of the trip’s itinerary and give assurance that their children will be in safe hands! As each aspect of the forthcoming trip is explained, we witness flashbacks to the previous year’s ‘eventful’ visit, which didn’t exactly go according to plan!
After sharing in the children’s initial excitement about the prospect of being away from home (song – Let Loose!) we see the impact that the pending separation has on their doting parents. As three sets of mums and dads fret about the sleeping arrangements and the potential non-brushing of teeth, one couple cracks open the champagne to toast the fact they’ll have the house to themselves for five blissful days! (song – Peace And Quiet). Next we meet five bus drivers who, over a cuppa in the café, nervously await the first glimpse of next week’s rota, to see which of them has been given the job of taking the school trip. Even sympathy from the friendly waitresses doesn’t calm them, as they explain just what it’s like being on a bus with children! (song – Bus Driver Blues).
Excitedly awaiting the arrival of their young guests are the staff of the Slippery Slopes Activity Centre, who discuss last-minute preparations which they hope will help avoid the need to give any more refunds this year! Having assured the manager that a list of challenging activities has been planned, that most of the toilets now flush, that there is warm-ish water in some of the bathrooms and that the air-ambulance is on standby, they throw open the doors! (song – Roll Up, Roll Up).
However, poor plumbing, five-mile hikes and hole-digging (then hole-filling) challenges aren’t exactly what the children and their teachers had hoped for, and they become disillusioned with their residential experience. They argue amongst themselves and find it impossible to work as a team, culminating in a disastrous attempt to build and sail a raft! (song – Let’s Build A Raft). The whole thing is made worse by the fact they are ridiculed by the other residents of Slippery Slopes, the smug and highly competitive pupils and teacher from the Toffington College of Excellence and High Achievement. (song – Toffington College). Can the children pull together to gain something positive from their five days away, or will it all have been just a waste of time?
A secret midnight feast is planned for their last night at Slippery Slopes (song – Midnight Feast). However, with adults on the prowl, a shortage of suitable confectionary and the Toffington lot threatening to ‘dob them in’, the children must be resourceful, dig deep and discover a bit of team-spirit which will ensure they finish their trip on a high. In a nail-biting climax they pull out all the stops and come to realise that anything can be achieved with the trust and support of good friends…and the ability to shin down a drainpipe! (song – Forever Your Friend).

Characters

44 Speaking parts in order of appearance

Note: if you have a smaller cast, because most characters only appear in one scene, multiple parts can be played by a single child. Alternatively, for extra-large cast numbers, many speaking parts have enough lines to be divided between any extra characters you want to create.

Mrs Grimm (headteacher), Mr Dainty and Miss Manly (teachers) – hosting the presentation evening for the parents of children going on the residential visit to Slippery Slopes Activity Centre.
4 Mums & 4 Dads – how will they cope with an empty, quiet, clean house?
5 Bus Drivers – eager to check out the week’s rota over a cuppa.
2 Waitresses – offering them sweet tea and sympathy.
Manager, 4 Activity Instructors, 3 Cooks, Odd-Job Man/Woman – the inept staff of the Slippery Slopes Activity Centre.
Mr Sharp, Miss Blunt, 8 Children – checking-in to Slippery Slopes without the faintest idea what they’re letting themselves in for!
6 Toffington College Pupils – they consider themselves the cream of the crop.
Mr/Miss Finster – their fuhrer…ahem, sorry, their teacher!

Ensemble Characters, if you have the numbers, for featured songs and choreography

This is awesome play. I loved participating in it from start to finish. I loved the last song, ‘Forever your Friend’. It was a great way to round off the night and say goodbye to primary school. It was also very funny.

Last year our Year Six children performed ‘Let Loose’ and without a doubt, it was one of the best performances that the school has ever produced. There were plenty of great parts to be shared out among the children, with none of the main parts too huge. It provided all of our children with the chance to shine.
The level of humour in the Edgy shows is always terrific. Some of the gags make the children roar with laughter, whilst others leave the children silent and the adults rolling in the aisles. Certainly, ‘Let Loose’ was no exception to this. The misfortune, disaster, farce and resolution provided a perfect platform for the children to excel. Our parents loved the show too. It marks the final culmination, the end of an era, which has seen the transition of them tearfully dropping off a shy four-year-old on their first day at school to watching the confident, bubbly eleven-year-old that they see on the stage before them.

Just a quick e-mail to say how well received your ‘Let Loose’ script was. We received lots of praise for the jokes and songs so thank you. As teachers, it was easy to add parts in by using the word format you provided and the extra discs were very useful when practising the songs in class.

What a hoot! A wonderful show for our two yr 6 classes, brings back lots of memories from school trips over the years! Clever, funny, easy to produce, great songs and a great way for the yr 6s to say goodbye to primary school. What more could a teacher want? Thanks Edgy Productions, I will be back for more next year!
